The Rhino & the Oxpecker

Lewa Downs, 2024

A classic scene from Lewa captures the remarkable success of the rhino conservation program, dedicated to preserving this iconic species.

Perched on the rhino's back is a small bird, an oxpecker. This bird-rhino relationship is symbiotic; the oxpecker feeds on ticks and other parasites found on the rhino's skin, providing relief to the larger animal while gaining nourishment. The scene is enlivened by a flurry of insects buzzing around, indicating the rich and dynamic ecosystem in which these animals coexist.

The rolling hills and expansive sky, dotted with clouds, create a sense of vastness and freedom. This is what the rhinos have come to enjoy in Lewa. On safari through the stunning Lewa landscape, the effectiveness of the re-wilding program is evident in the abundant rhino population. It’s truly inspiring to see a conservation program achieve such positive results.

I’m thrilled to introduce my first-ever rhino print: The Rhino & the Oxpecker.
