The King Under the Mountain

Lewa Downs, 2024

My first drive on Lewa Conservancy unfolded into an unforgettable experience. Amidst the spectacle of unfamiliar species and breathtaking vistas, we arrived at the serene expanse of what is known as ‘Sambara Dam’.

Picture-perfect, the scene unfolded: the sun descending behind the rolling hills, casting a golden glow upon the tranquil waters. As we sat by the watering hole, with Mount Kenya gracing the horizon to our left, it seemed impossible for the scenery to surpass its current beauty.

However, we were interrupted by the arrival of a commanding bull elephant, his presence announced by the rhythmic sway of his trunk and the determined stride in his manner. With unwavering confidence, he made a direct path towards the watering hole, undoubtedly intent on quenching his thirst.

What followed was a spectacle to behold.

Standing mere meters away, he indulged in a mighty gulp of water before turning to face us, a silent proclamation of dominance. After a brief moment of communion with his audience, he shook off the remnants of his drink and gracefully continued on his journey, splashing the vehicle in the process and leaving me in awe.

All the while, the silhouette of Mount Kenya stood sentinel in the background, a timeless witness to wild encounters.
