The Herds of Aruba

Tsavo, 2022

As seen in William Yeoward, Kings Road, London.

Having spent 4 days in Tsavo, including 2 breakdowns and three different vehicles, I was determined to achieve some shots that I came looking for.

Tsavo is often a very dry landscape. Most of the elephants gather at the waterholes throughout the park, or base themselves close to the Galana River.

We positioned ourselves near Aruba Dam one evening, a hotspot for elephants gathering to drink. After a short wait, over the horizon came wave after wave of elephants. Some came in single file, following the ancient elephant tracks.

But, as pictured, this herd fanned out and marched directly towards us in a line across the distance. It was incredible to witness and I hope I’ve managed to do it justice with this image.
