Harry
Maasai Mara, 2023
This, on the surface, may seem self-indulgent but I actually am not responsible for naming this incredible elephant.
He is named after me, though.
Last year during my time in the Maasai Mara, I noticed this guy one day. He has larger tusks than usual Mara elephant so I was immediately drawn to him.
After spending countless hours in the field photographing and filming him, I received an email from @maraelephantproject.
They informed me that this elephant was in their database as “Individual 668”. However, as they noticed me spending so much time with him, they had decided to officially rename him Harry.
So, there is a colossal elephant roaming around the greater Mara ecosystem as my namesake.
That’s pretty cool.
This is one of my favourite shots of him - powerful yet graceful form, facing the camera, storm clouds behind.
